Welcome to Leipzig!

Leipzig is a city of great history, trade fairs and universities, of rich heritage in music, performing arts and books, but it is citizens who make Leipzig what it is. The city has a strong tradition of activism and citizen involvement – it is not by accident that the Peaceful Revolution in 1989 started here.

Leipzig is a vibrant and dynamic place, a city where creativity has percolated every street, building and neighbourhood. Formerly affected by its industrial heart, Leipzig experienced a sharp population decline after the wall fell. Nowadays, the very opposite is true. Hailed as a ‚booming town‘, ‚Hypezig‘ or the ’new Berlin‘ by many, people are flocking to Leipzig in search of a good work-life balance and opportunities to pursue entrepreneurial ventures. Large investments in car production, logistics and health care industries had been allocated with thousands of new qualified jobs. There is a buzz in the air, a feeling that things are happening here.

The way of life evolves around the outdoors as much as possible. A third of the city is green, and the Leipzig Floodplain Forest runs through the city as its ‚green lung‘. On a boat trip along the canals and rivers, the industrial heritage of the city can be discovered in a very different way. During the warmer month, the lakes surrounding the city – former coal mines that have been flooded – attract swimmers, sailors and surfers.
